Get to know Elburn, IL

  • Population: Elburn is a village in Kane County, Illinois, with a population of 6,175 as of the 2020 census.  It lies approximately 46 miles west of downtown Chicago. The village serves as the western terminus of Metra's Union Pacific West Line, providing residents with convenient commuter rail service to Chicago.

  • Historical Background: Established in 1854 as Blackberry Station when the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad extended through the area, Elburn was incorporated in 1886.
  •  In 1834, William Lance settled in the area now known as Elburn, Illinois, constructing one of the first homes. Shortly after, Henry Warne established the Halfway House, a stagecoach inn aptly named for its midpoint location between Oregon, Illinois, and Chicago. The arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railroad in 1854 led to the establishment of Blackberry Station, named after the local township. The village was officially incorporated as Elburn in 1886.

  • Population Growth: Once predominantly rural, Elburn experienced significant population growth in the 1990s, largely due to the development of large tract home communities. In January 2006, Metra extended its Union Pacific West Line, introducing passenger rail service from Elburn to Chicago. This extension shifted the western terminus from Geneva to Elburn, establishing it as one of Chicago's farthest western suburbs. Additionally, a new station was constructed in La Fox to accommodate the expanded service.

  • The village has experienced significant growth, with the population increasing from less than 2,000 in the 1990's to approximately 6,676 in 2024.

  • Community Events: Elburn hosts various community events, including the annual Christmas Stroll, featuring downtown lights, Main Street shops, and the Kris Kringle Market at Obscurity Brewing.

  • Local Attractions: The village offers attractions such as the Hughes Creek Golf Club and unique shops like Vinyl & Vintage, enhancing its small-town charm.
